Shrink film
Shrink film, also known as shrink wrap, is a polymer plastic film that shrinks tightly around an object when heated. It’s a versatile material used for packaging finished goods, and can be used to waterproof, weatherproof, and tamperproof items of any size.
Shrink film can be made from a variety of materials, including polyolefin, polyvinyl-chloride, or polyethylene. It can be printed, laminated, and metallized, and is easy to handle on automatic packaging machines.
To apply heat to the film, you can use a handheld heat gun (electric or gas), or pass the product and film through a heat tunnel on a conveyor. The film shrinks quickly and uniformly around the contents, and the shrink force is usually expressed in PSI. Understanding shrink force is important when packaging multi-packs that need to be firmly contained without being damaged.
Shrink film has many uses, including:
- Packaging
Shrink film can be used to package grocery vegetables, ball of twine, and other finished goods. For example, polypropylene packaging can be used for snack foods, florals, and apparel.
- Industrial purposes
Heavier versions of shrink film can be used to cover large equipment, construction scaffoldings, helicopters, and other big vehicles.
- Window insulation
You can cut the plastic to fit your window, adhere it with double-sided tape, and then shrink-wrap it to fit snugly across the pane. This can help reduce cold or hot air from entering your house through your windows.
